How to use tener

Tener means to have, and it's also used for age and many physical states where English uses "to be". Tener que + infinitive means "to have to".

  • Tengo veinte años.I'm twenty years old.
  • ¿Tienes hambre?Are you hungry?
  • Tenemos que salir temprano. We have to leave early.
  • Tuve un sueño raro.I had a strange dream.

Common mistake: Say «tengo frío» (I'm cold), not «estoy frío», which means your body is cold to the touch.
